The founders of The Yummy Idea (TYI), a successful digital platform for home chefs, have recently announced a novel partnership involving Roseate Hotels & Resorts and EHL Advisory Services to prepare a top calibre talent pool for Industry recruiters to hire called Hotelier-50. About to be launched next month, Radhika Garg, Co-Founder, TYI spoke in detail about the Hotelier-50 program and the role of each partner in making the new skilling program a different one altogether.
Could you explain the Hotelier-50 program and what kind of current gap in hospitality talent recruitment market that the program is trying to address?
With many hotels, inns, hostels and more tying-up with both national and international hospitality brands, there is an increased level of training and welcome shift in perspective that needs to be brought into the hospitality sector. Today, travellers care more about exploring off-beat locations and cultural immersion. People are looking for more unusual tourist spots specially the millennial and Gen Z generation. Moreover, the industry is now seeking to hire more local residents in order to contribute towards the local communities and also have a staff with better understanding and familiarity of the location to guide patrons more effectively. Hospitality sector is heavily dependent on the satisfaction of their patrons. Therefore, industry, academic and multi-skilling institute partnerships have to be created to source staff at all levels, especially entry level staff.
The Yummy Idea (TYI) is a unique proposition which brings all three ends of the hospitality industry viz. hotels, Academia and Students on a single platform with the help of our mobile application. It is amongst the very few DIPP, Govt of India recognized startups in the skill development category in the sector. The means of imparting education and knowledge dissemination have not changed for decades in the Indian hospitality industry. Hotelier 50 is a wider umbrella, which is composed of TYI Academy, TYI App & TYI Talent Solutions. With TYI Academy we train young professionals with the help of specialized industry trainers & mentors. TYI App is the e-profiling solution that can be used by students to evidence their learnings and get access to the new way of reaching recruiters by replacing traditional CV. TYI Talent Solution helps recruiters find the best talent for their job openings.
The pandemic has hit the entire world and given the worst blow to the Hospitality Industry in particular. Many students have not attended college at all, some have graduated online and have suffered the loss of exposure and on ground training. Our module is specially designed for Hotel Management students (fresh graduates) and young experienced professionals to upskill themselves with the knowledge of personality profiling, industry exposure & preparation for entry-level employment skills like mock interviews, elevator pitch, communication, leadership, team-work etc.
Other than creating one more layer of training and industry preparation for industry aspirants, what value the program is really adding to their career progression?
Hotelier 50 is a unique proposition for the hospitality industry where we prepare a pool of best 50 candidates across India to become industry ready. The 3-month progressive program allows an Individual to show their commitment in assessing their own strength and weakness, nurture their soft skills or entry-level employment skills like communication, presentation, leadership with our unique methods of case study and role plays. The USP of the program is the Skill Matrix designed for each candidate which gives recruiters a tangible tool to assess their ability to perform their duties.
Today, leading hospitality companies understand that in order to compete for the top talent, they need best-in-class talent acquisition and contingent workforce. While recruiters look for talent acquisition, where they assess the skills of a candidate while hiring employees, hospitality educators and colleges lay more focus on technical skills.
In the current scenario, mere enthusiasm of a fresher, his resume, does not display relevant work experience. The traditional CVs do not reflect soft-skills like communication, ability to work in teams, adaptive and flexible mindset which are very sought after in the growing competitive landscape. The Yummy Idea scrutinizes the hospitality students with utmost detail and takes care that no stone is left unturned. HOTELIER 50 is a solution crafted to address and solve the toughest talent acquisition challenges with programs uniquely tailored to hospitality hiring needs.
The Hotelier-50 program has three partners working in it – The Yummy Idea (TYI), Roseate Hotels and Resorts and EHL Advisory Services. What kind of role each partner has in the program to make the program fulfilling for the students/job aspirants?
The Hotelier-50 program is designed for fresh hospitality graduates in collaboration with the knowledge development arm of the Ecole Hotelier de Lausanne (EHL) Education Group – EHL Advisory Services and India’s leading 5-star luxury Hotel Brand Roseate Hotels & Resorts. The respective roles of our partners are:
PHASE 1 (20 DAYS): EHL with its deep-rooted expertise, knowledge and credibility, backed by Insights Explore (a personality profiling tool based on Carl Jung’s work in psychology) has designed a bespoke program ‘BRAND YOU’ to support the students journey of self awareness and personal development. This program focuses on laying the foundation for a heightened sense of self awareness for improved relationships, personal growth, effective communication, enhanced productivity, and inspirational young leadership.
PHASE 2 (40 DAYS) TYI Academy’s soft skill training module is designed specifically to address the challenges faced by the fresh graduates and help them groom for life after college. A wholesome amalgamation of coursework, case studies, mock interviews, role plays, situation handling and live talks by industry experts that help students to test the waters before taking the final plunge. Our aim is to inculcate the right habit and ethics of knowledge, skill and desire in professionals which also helps in keeping them motivated to create their own value. At the end of the 45 hours program students get the TYI Skill matrix (given by mentors) that helps them identify their skills and make decisions according to their interests. It also provides the real time learning graph to recruiters.
PHASE 3: ON THE JOB TRAINING (30 days) at Roseate Hotels & Resorts:
After completing the 2 months of online training with EHL Advisory and TYI Academy, students are taken for 4 weeks of offline ‘On-The-Job Training at Roseate House. Each student will be given a choice to pick from any of the four departments:
• Food Production
• Room Service
• Front Desk
• Food & Beverage
Based on their performance and acumen, candidates will then be assigned various departments and given training modules that would include all the exercises and practices under the guidance of experienced trainers and mentors.
Who are the people you are targeting to join the program? What is the recruitment process, and training capacities in a year?
We are targeting freshers and experienced professionals who have graduated with hotel management degrees and are looking to upskill themselves while also gaining industry exposure and employment opportunities.
Towards the end of the 3 Months training, TYI will provide recruitment through the following process:
EMPLOYEE BRANDING: Hotels will verify candidates by going through their E-profile which allows recruiters to get a better understanding of a candidate’s personality through a 2 min pitch video of the candidate introducing themselves and why they think they are most suitable for the job. The e-profile also includes testimonials by their mentors and evidence of their academic learning experience.
TYI SKILL MATRIX: The Yummy Idea provides a skill matrix of each candidate, specifying their strengths and weaknesses and how the candidate has grown into a valuable asset during the 3 months of training.
PERSONAL INTERVIEW: Based on above assessments, recruiters then get to hand pick the best candidates and connect with them for face-to-face interactions.
With the first batch starting from May 2021, our target is to get a minimum 6 Batches of 50 each by the end of this year. We have successfully generated enough job openings for Management Trainees, Commis Chefs, House-keeping Executive with 4-star and above rated hotels from across the country.
